Trump's MATH JUST AIN'T MATHING! Economists quickly pointed out that there is no plausible scenario in which housing inflation is literally zero, which is what his inflation report claims, while vacancy rates remain tight and new leases continue to reset higher. The report's treatment of shelter costs clashes with private rent trackers and with the experience of tenants facing renewal notices that still include sizable increases. That is why some analysts described the housing component as a wacky number, arguing that the assumption of flat shelter prices was doing far more work in the CPI calculation than any genuine cooling in the cost of living, a concern that was underscored when critics of the data called the housing estimate a wacky number that did not square with market conditions.
