I saw where a guy built a little house out of free wood pallets. He had a hatchet with a hammer on the other end, a handsaw to cut the wood. He made a bed kinda like a trundle bed. He made windows out of one piece of glass. He put a heater/stove in it with the smoke stack outside but, he used rocks, a "cement" he made out of soil and water mixed by hand to use to adhere the rocks together to build a chimney, (I was impressed). He got his food and herbs from the area around his house. He made tea out of natural herbs. This was done in 121 days.
The strong survive with modern tools and electricity.

enjoy the rain water when it leaks every rain. the water proofing tarp has more holes than Swiss cheese. this guy definitely not a roofer.
the grain on the wood is all wrong for shingles man you made sponge roofing
shoulda planked some logs, you're going to get soaking wet with that roof.

You can eat those ferns.I married a beautiful Korean lady.One spring we were riding around & she started saying STOP,STOP. In the woods right off of the road they were growing everywhere. We stopped and she gathered a bunch of them. You have to pick them when they are young,anyway she cooked some up with supper with other stuff.They turn brown when cooked & I realized that I had eaten them a lot in Korea.
