She found out it wasn't a cloud, but rather, a smoke stack about 1,000' high and she fell right into the opening!

I think it would be terrifying to free fall in pea soup fog, which is what a cloud is, simply higher off the ground. You begin to think you'll hit the ground before seeing it approach.
