The center of the trunk is probably hollow from decay acting like a chimney flue and the moisture content still inside the wood will turn into steam which can actually cause the tree split and break apart or outright explode. Either way it鈥檚 safer to go ahead and cut it since it鈥檚 gonna die anyway
