Give the dog a bath. Use some gentle soap and they will slide off easily along with the hitchhikers they get. My dog gets covered in them and I hate them. I keep them shorter now but that was the best way I found.

Shave it, no guard. It’s your only option

I'd have the dog shaved. The fur will grow back. No sense in putting the dog through all that misery of combing (and yourself).

clipping would be easiest but not best. When you shave that kind of double coated dog, it ruins it. When it grows back in, the undercoat is like wool and never gets better. Id get a comb, put some slightly warmed coconut oil on him, one tiny section at a time, and go to work. takes a lot of time and a LOT of patience.

Folks, before you own a dog like that, you might do some research on maintenance. The suggestion earlier in this list of comments to gently comb its coat with warm coconut oil seems the wisest & most humane solution! 🤔🥰

No need to hurt the dog. ☹️ olive or coconut oil should do the trick.

Besides using a really good detangler, like someone suggested, you might want to invest in a "Wet" brush for people. It is gentle when combing out bad tangles, knots in hair. A lifesaver for getting out bad bad knots in the hair, especially if you have longer hair. Rinse your dogs hair in the shower, lather him up with some super moisturizing shampoo, rinse well, then put a lot of really good moisturizing, detangling conditioner, work it through well, then use the "Wet" brush while the conditioner is on the fur to get the tangles/mats out of the hair, then rinse well . Then brush well before you blow dry. Do not rub a towel back and forth on the fur, as this may cause more mats, try to just pat him dry, and let him do the "shake shake" thing dogs do to remove water before using the blower and brush at same time.
