That's how I was taught. Always get a receipt, even for a candy bar. I grew up in some places where if you bought something and walked out the store with no receipt to prove you bought the item, they could turn around and accuse you of stealing. And that's even when they sold you the item personally. So,

I lived in my place for four years, paying the landlord's brother directly with money orders, because the landlord lived in Seattle, Washington, I lived in Rochester, NY. A few years into my stay the landlord called me saying I hadn't paid rent. I told him he was mistaken, he was going by what his brother told him. I think I was three years in. I asked when didn't I pay rent, he gave me dates. I went to those particular dates, and send him my money order receipts. I kept every receipt. Come to find out the brother was keeping the money for himself to supply his drug habit. I didn't stay long after that. KEEP ALL OF YOUR RECEIPTS!!! i
My tenant pays by money order. Once she mails it, she takes a picture and texts a copy to me. we both get receipts.

This is so true. I deposit the rent into landlords bank accounts every month. She had the nerve to file evictions paperwork. Deputies came to our house to serve courts eviction. Our daughter called me at the hospital as my husband was just admitted for seizures. I call the court and was advised to bring paperwork to them. V. A. Social worker also called. I took all my receipts to court before date. Judge told clerk to tell me to pay court all rent until court date. Which I did and landlord came to house and tried act surprised. The surprised was I was ordered by paperwork to pay eviction court all monthly rent to them. Landlords was had a big fine and court was in our favor. Told landlord they had all my receipts and advised of the law. Judge Told landlord to leave us alone. I was late for 2 weeks but money order was purchased the 1 st of every month. That month my husband was rushed to hospital as non responsive from seizures. Landlord thought I didn’t keep receipts. 🤔🤔🤔
I’m a landlord and I don’t take advantage of my tenants. And mostly don’t charge them late fees. I was a tenant once myself

Hope she brought her bag of receipts to court. She is well spoken and frustrated; who could blame her. The older generation, no matter the race, keeps proof because they know there are criminals out there, trying to take advantage of folks.
I understand you ma’am!!! Taking precious time from my mother. The trauma of leaving her to go to court to prove what someone else did incorrectly but accusing me of not paying is extremely stressful. Having to drive downtown through the I-70/I-35/71 mess and locating parking. Trying to walk to the court after finding parking 3 City blocks away. Shame on them, They don’t care. Elderly are considered to be useless.
Ture story, my landlord the husband passed away, the wife evicted me for no reason, so the handyman and his girlfriend could move in, they thought I was on government assistance. The handyman couldn't pay the rent. The handyman unalived the landlord. sad.

I had a landlord like this that took me to court for nonpayment of rent. I had all my receipts showing made to the date, I guess the person picking up the checks were keeping them😲 my case was dismissed.

there are some scammy landlords but on the other there are people taken someone's property and change locks in the meantime landlord are paying their rent this lady seems to be in the right hopefully she can get some justice from the judge

I feel you on this ma'am, went through the same thing in 2024, had my proof hand written down with exact dates and conformation numbers, and called my card to send me statements and still was accused for not paying rent and top that it was my neighbors information the had and still refused to to right their wrongs and still tried to eveict me....I pray you get through this cause some people get too cooky and cruel when they think they are over you, false authority from property managers and not the actual owners make them feel like they are better than you and can do whatever they want to innocent people, not all landlords are likes take this clear but scumlords need to be stopped before they hurt some others for false reasons

Our manager shredded the cashier's check talking about they told him he could. Crazy young white kid-with an attitude, not socialized. He'd been home schooled, married a woman old enough to be his dang mama but didn't know cashiers checks are money.👀 I wouldn't get them another one until there was an apology because he tried to blame us-I had receipts. They received a reduced check (they took a few hundred off) and we got them another check. Their loss for hiring yet another mediocre manager to work for them. Quit playing with people.😳
that happened to a car payment I told the bank the check was cashed, you find the mistake. the payment was on someone else's account. it took the bank 2 months to find my payment
Seriously!!! she’s got receipts. She can prove it. She’s got dates when they were cashed.?? I have to believe her.! she’s having to not even have to representative to help her like an attorney… she’s taking care of her mom. Those people need to be fined that lost the receipt receipts. It’s on them not on her. That’s my opinion. I’m not a judge, but I’m in sight with her.

i would be as angry and frustrated as you are but i don't know if I could handle it with such grace. I've not gad these issues re l ated to housing but I have for so many other things. Very frustrating when we are honorable in paying our expenses yet the billing company denies ir loses pay m ents. i also HATE the amount of time we must invest in fixing this issue. As an okder woman, some resolutions required are almost beyond my physical ability to resolve.💕

I have been living in my apartment for years. The only receipts I don't have is the month's I paid by check and copies are easy to obtain from the bank. I mostly pay by money orders because they provide instant proof of payment
