This was the least of the law. Any man who took on any responsibilities for the family, including a relative providing financial help was declared to be financially responsible for the entire. Family. I was right out of college, enforcing these laws. I think there were several things that would make a man responsible including any sexual relationship. We actually questioned woman about their sex lives. This law was still in place in 1969. We went to every home. We also learned , if we had a conscience to ignore any signs a man lived there. These were people living in incredible poverty. I did this job in Memphis Tennessee until King was killed in my territory, then again in Palm Beach county , Florida , the rural areas. .
