where was this. I landed in South Dakota during hurricane force winds the newspaper said the next day in a falcon we had to shut engines down instantly when landscapers burlap type stuff came blowing right towards us. it looked like a giant tumble weed and I sat jump seat that flight It was probably one of the scarier landings for me.
Been flying professionally for 45 Years, and this is not the smartest move, but, at a small airport, watching the wind sock is vital…if it is swapping ends, time to go find someplace else to land or, just wait it out.
A friend years ago in an ultralight turned into the wind , blown backwards into high tension lines , at the last moment wind shifted and he avoided death
looked it up. the pilot died. after landing the gust caused the plane to lift and flipped it over spark from the wing caught the plane on fire and pilot couldn't get out

when I was 14 I soloed in a 2 seat training glider in between heavy thunderstorms I wanted to do it on my birthday I was in the civil Air patrol and there was a break in the weather there was a part in the middle of the flight where the nearby AFB had to be contacted over my two-way radio to ask a helicopter pilot to divert because he was in the same cloud but I couldn't see him
