In mid-July 2021, Germany faced one of its deadliest natural disasters in decades. After just 2 days of relentless rainfall, rivers like the Ahr and Erft overflowed, wiping out entire towns. Over 180 people died, with thousands more displaced. Roads, homes, and bridges were torn apart. The region saw up to 8 inches (200+ mm) of rain in 48 hours something that normally takes 2 months. Experts blamed poor warning systems, aging infrastructure, and climate change for the scale of the destruction.
