thats why you never weld or cut an empty tank. fill it with water to reduce e space for fumes.
I always purge any tank I'm welding with argon
My uncle was welding a baffle inside a semi tanker. He had an assistant helping. As soon as he lit the torch, there was an explosion and flash . He was ok on his side of the baffle, the assistant was killed on the other side. He followed all safety protocols. Flushed it, tested it for fumes before beginning work. OSHA determined that gas had permeated the metal, retaining gas.
Haha some idiot did this after being told not to at our local welding place no one was seriously hurt but caused a bad fire and tons for damage

Should’ve drained the gas
purge it with your shielding gas, produces better weld and prevents ignition. The "face shield" was his welding helmet.

My ex wife's uncle was real stupid. It didn't help that he was straight off the mountain and couldn't read or write. He decided that he would repair a hole in his gas tank and he did have sense enough to empty the tank but still he didn't flush or add any water. it blew up and he had his face all melted and his fingers were melted and stuck to the palms of his hands.
