Europe is now bookended between two aggressive nations with large militaries and numerous nuclear weapons. Europe's options are limited by geography and internal politics. European militaries are collectively substantial but not well coordinated and clearly no match for either the US or Russia and certainly not both simultaneously. Remember how Germany and the old Soviet Union divided up Poland at the start of WWII? I think that must weigh heavily on the decision-making process of European leaders.
