Iโ€™m 21, and yeahโ€ฆ I drive a pickup truck. A few nights ago, I went on a date with a 56-year-old guy. I wasnโ€™t in my work clothesโ€”no boots, no flannel. I actually tried that night. I wore a dress, did my hair, kept the makeup light. Dinner started off normal. We talked about music, where we grew up, the usual stuff. Then he asked the question, โ€œSo what do you do for work?โ€ I told him, โ€œI drive a truck.โ€ The way his face changedโ€ฆ it was instant. โ€œA real truck?โ€ he said, like Iโ€™d just told him I flew fighter jets. Then he laughed, and it wasnโ€™t a nice laugh. โ€œCome onโ€ฆ thatโ€™s a manโ€™s job.โ€ And he kept going. โ€œYouโ€™re 21. You should be in college or something.โ€ โ€œNo guy wants a girl who lives at truck stops.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re gonna ruin your back doing that.โ€ Then he said the one thing that really stuck with me: โ€œA woman your age should be soft. Not built for work.โ€ Built for work. He paid the bill, stood up, and said, โ€œGood luck finding a man who wants that lifestyle,โ€ then walked out just like that. I sat there for a minute staring at the table, trying to process how someone who had been chasing me for a week suddenly looked at me like I was something strange. When I got back to my truck, it was dark and I was still shaking. I went to climb in and smacked my head on the door frameโ€”hard. I sat there rubbing my forehead, half laughing, half embarrassed, because in that moment I realized something: some men say they like hardworking womenโ€ฆ until they meet one who actually is.
