He hit down at an angle. Once the plane hit the ground, it twisted which could be why the landing gear collapsed. The tail hook had nothing to do with the crash. They land on carriers all the time with that exact configuration without that happening.

F-16s don't land on aircraft carriers - that's the Air Force (Air Farce in this case! Lol!). Navy and USMC pilots (females AND males) aim for the 3 wire under full-power for a bolter should they miss all cables, as I understand it! I invite confirmation and/or discussion?

F-16 is a land aircraft. It has neither the beefed up airframe, hanging gear, or tail hook to survive a carrier landing. The tail hook would simply come off and the plain and occupant would be doing swim quals!
