on first glance it looks like he may have cut that straight edge on the wrong side of the 2x4 however there is a staircase to the left so I would think as opposed to having all those ends being the first step down they are going to lay a 2x6 the width of the whole staircase and have that a slight overhang with that board if that wasn't intentional then that would be the fix and it would look better. That's my professional opinion. as a matter of fact they're not even removing any of the deck boards they're just adding a staircase
