I'm a street outreach worker & you never enter someone's hood or encampment without approval. You dress to blend in. No, or jewelry you don't mind losing. You don't carry anything initially & if you plan to bring stuff in, explain what, why, & where to. You show respect 100% of the time. You answer their questions honestly. Be genuine & clear about your intentions. You keep your head level & walk as if you've lived there all your life, but never be arrogant towards the people. You never say 'I'm scared' & grab the purse you shouldn't be carrying. Wear shoes you can run in. It seems like the guy beside her was from the area, but he did a piss poor job of speaking to these guys, which endangers them both.
