I did this the summer after high school, before I got good with that spike mall I wore out ( broke) many wood handles by missing spike and handle would hit rail ---- that summer I decided I wasn't meant for manual labor
and still don't know how to swing the hammer
yep did this work for about a week now in rubber work i line tanks but this is no joke pain in the ass work right here
they got a big machine to do that, but if that's what u like doing be my guest
They used to have that competition at the railroad days here in Topeka, Kansas many many years ago

I worked with my brother and one of his friends and did that work. It took a 3 man team to drive spikes in new ties every day in the hot sun at a dusty coal temple 🛕.

I've done that you can really split the handle if you hit the spike wrong. we also had a automatic spiker w hydraulic power
