I did this the summer after high school, before I got good with that spike mall I wore out ( broke) many wood handles by missing spike and handle would hit rail ---- that summer I decided I wasn't meant for manual labor

I worked with my brother and one of his friends and did that work. It took a 3 man team to drive spikes in new ties every day in the hot sun at a dusty coal temple πŸ›•.

I've done that you can really split the handle if you hit the spike wrong. we also had a automatic spiker w hydraulic power
