30 years working with steel and this is nonsense! WD 40 is a lubricant and can in no way influence the characteristics of a metal unless it is present when the metal is molten such as during casting or during repair welding it can then cause inclusions or a crystallization in the metal weakening it.🤔

WD-40 isn't a lubricant it was originally designed as a water displacer

What he’s doing is changing the composition of the steel. Doing this trick makes the steel malleable, and allows a hitch ball after it has been bent to be tweaked straight again. Pretty standard stuff. I’m surprised so very few know about this?

Since most of us don't remove our hitchball once we are done towing something my guess is covering it this way prevents rust.
