He should have set his drag a little looser to reduce tension on the rod and tire the fish and eventually tire him out to reel him in. The drag should always be set where you can set the hook, reel in when they're still and goes out when they pull to keep tension off the line, the reel, and yip, the pole too!!

I remember being 8,9,10 years old in Daytona. A majority of the fishers were old black ladies fishing of walls by the marina. I learned how a cane pole and some corn on a hook could catch you big mullet and also lots about life and people...Good times馃グ

These fishermen are going for carp, and their set up isn鈥檛 a traditional rod and reel set up like in the video. Essentially, these fishermen are using a telescoping rod with a fixed length of line at the end. These poles are locally made. They鈥檙e in China. Also, he aggressively pulled his pole straight up; focus all the weight on the thinner rods. Essentially just got too excited.
