I'm a diabetic and there have been a few times I was in line up by the register and knew I had to eat something quick, as I started getting weak, sweating and thirsty so I'd grab something there by the checkout area and start eating it, or I had grabbed something as I was in line... but, I would let the cashier know what was happening and hand the candy wrapper, or whatever I was eating, to her first and make sure she knew why I had or was eating it and have her add it to my bill first. There's a difference in honesty and dishonesty. 👍

This behavior is termed "Grazing". Eating or drinking an item in a store before paying for it. One thing I've noticed while managing a retail store before is that most customers would put the empty wrapper or can in the front of their cart so that it is visible. It for the most part shows their intent to pay for the item they either ate or drank. And most customers upon checkout would tell me they ate or drank said item whilst shopping and sometimes give me a reason for doing such. So until they reach the checkout, I do not immediately assume they are shoplifting. There have been times that I've seen a customer eat or drink something and just leave the wrapper or can on the store shelf somewhere and then upon checkout will not say a word. I will then casually mention said item or drink they had consumed and most of the time the item is then paid for along with a random excuse 😅 And a look of being somewhat embarrassed.

I know when my sugar is low…I was in a checkout specifically to grab a candy bar so I would have a RECEIPT. I felt sick in a store once & a kind salesperson ran to her office to bring me something & made me sit down. I’ll never forget her.🌸🙏🏼

I went to the grocery store around 7pm one night and I was so hungry and I got a gluten free cereal bar and I ate it .I had not eaten all day ,plus I have to wait 2 hours after I take my meds then take my thyroid pill but I put my wrapper that I ate and told the cashier I ate the cereal bar and charge me and she did.

I drank a water while I was in the store. Then when I got to the register….. I PAID FOR IT. I can see her eating it but then she put the wrapper in her bag. No intention on paying for it. I wonder how many times she has done this and gotten away with it. If she saw someone else do that she would have been screaming her head off.
When I have been desperate, and I ate or drank something on the line, I would always show the cashier the rapper or the bottle and pay for it! But I don’t think this woman had any intention of doing that - so yes, she’s a shoplifter

I really don't think she already had it. She wouldn't need to be defensive just say she bought it before she came in. Just saying none of your business makes you look suspicious even if you did already have it. She probably won't pay for it unless the dude follows her and squeals but I don't think she intended to after and some nosy body caught her before she did.

I've let my kids eat a snack and then pay for the empty container/wrapper.
Sometimes my sugar level goes low and I need to eat right away. So I take what I can and pay at head of line when I get there. Often it's ice cream sandwiches. Don't want to pass out. Might be dead before help figures out what is wrong. Go comatose and it is bad news for my survivors. And me too!
