they are professionals, they are listening to the sound of the chains to change as they drag them across, and those spots can indicate deeper problems like concrete delamination, and rebar issues. so just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it isn't a science.

ok I was a plumber and I used the 2 copper rod truck it worked but WTF it this what are they trying to achieve and what does chains in a stick show you? 2 copper rods bent with 2 feet from each in different hands apart from each other will attract to each other when a water line is under them it does work but what's this b.s Simone enlighten me
