The ships are probably there conducting operational readiness training and assessment prior to deployments, scheduled 18 to 24 months ago. This is regardless of Marine Corps birthdays. Vance and the SECDEF show up to play I'm the boss. Let's flex! Marines do training on the shore, offshore and on land all the time. Funny how somethings go wrong when the inexperienced are around!
