for some reason most people seem to think that everyone who lived in the south back then had these big glorious homes/plantations and owned all these slaves when the reality was there were so many poor people that scraped by living in tiny homes, they could barely afford food.

Less than 1% of the population of the south owned any slaves! And after the war when all those former slaves were informed they were free and could go anywhere they wanted, why then did the majority of those former slaves choose to remain on the very same plantations they were former slaves of and continue working on those plantations?
