You're not supposed to pick an adult cat up by the scruff. it's a myth that they don't feel it. that only applies to when they're kittens. after they become adults, grabbing them by the scruff not only can cause pain and discomfort but it can make them stressed out. I didn't know this until just now when I did a little bit of online research.
