The Gateway Arch in St. Louis was built as a monument to symbolize the westward expansion of the United States. Completed in 1965, it commemorates Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening the frontier and St. Louis’s historic position as the “Gateway to the West.” I know it does not seem like it now but Saint Louis was a very big deal back in the day. Boats full of goods used to come and leave St. Louis all the time. It was a major shipping hub. Now the Gateway Arch is a functional work of art that gives you a good view of St. Louis when you reach the top.

St. Louis was known as the gateway to the west. The arch was a memorial the all the people that had gone through the town on their way to the west .
