Fruit tree farmer here. This technique will prevent a tree from splitting. The size of the washers or steel plates depends on the size of the tree and the expected loads. It will not kill the tree. Doing nothing probably will allow the tree to split and that will definitely cause a shortening of its life. We use this type of thing all the time. It helps to create wide angle crotches to prevent splitting in young trees and it extends its life. In an existing tree such as this...you do what you can.

worked on trees for years. first a cable 2/3 way up would work better. 2nd this bolt is to low on the trunk. 3rd large washers should be placed on either end before the bolts to prevent the tree sucking it in or not applying any pressure.

My dad had a pecan tree start to split. It was a big tree and made a lot of nuts. He ran a huge bolt through it. The tree never split any further and continued to ‘fruit’(?) for the next 50+ years. Eventually over the years it grew over the bolt and washers so they disappeared inside. Never hurt the tree a bit.

I don't care! Did anyone else hear the tree screaming!?

I'm no arborist, but I think that fix would need to be slightly higher and use larger washers/plates to prevent a split. He's only a couple inches above the crotch.

Some larger washers would more than likely be helpful

had a tree climber friend that was hired to remove mistletoe from a tree in a round about driveway. this all thread tree bandaid was a contributing factor to him losing his leg from the knee down. coming down the tree spike hit the all thread and washer/nut and down he fell. feet first from 20', his right foot and spure hit a large rock next to the tree, and bent his spur to nearly a 90degree bend, exploding his leg from the knee down like dropping a handful of toothpicks onto the dinner table.

My husband did that to one of our fruit trees. It’s still standing after many years.

why can you not do what they call cabling. you run cable from the strongest center point to the smaller limbs. there still able to sway with the wind but won't go past breaking point. size of cable depends on size of tree. when installed correctly the lift of the tree is extended compared to without.

That will absolutely not stop that tree from splitting

I do believe a tree that size and knowing that it is growing larger and larger that I would have been putting a bit larger washers or steel plates on both sides

Wait till the lightning finds this bolt like it found the ones on our sycamore trees.

Too low it should’ve been a little bit higher by a couple of feet

You need to use a larger rod, washers and bolts! One limb measures about 4 to 5 feet around and the other one is about over 3 feet round

I have a huge hickory that is splitting and hollowing out fom the inside. It was cabled together up high in the 1960's by previous owner and is still ok. Thinking about adding another cable . Cabling keeps trees from splitting and if done correctly will insure direction of falling sections if they do come down to protect property.

galvanized bolts will kill the tree, that's why you should only use 316 stainless steel bolts and fasteners to install in a live tree

Ok thanks for the info but gotta say in this day and age if your gonna post a video like this our many others you need to give context because not everyone has common sense our knowledge about what’s going on here luckily I do a lot of diy and love to watch treehouse builds where they explain these things

we used cable inside of old piece of garden hose around both sides of pine tree with adjuster bolt in the middle. has held up for years & we have had some pretty nasty wind storms. Last one uprooted half dozen big trees.
