Just because they didn’t own slaves doesn’t mean they weren’t racist. The Union abolished slavery to cripple the Confederate economic engine which was bankrolling their war. Once free slaves fled north where they were declared ‘contraband of war’ to prevent them from being returned to the south to help the rebel efforts. They were far from being treated civilly after abolishment. In the north, prejudice and violence was in full effect towards ‘freedman’ sans plantations. That was the only difference…
