Where I am, and I amazing landlord, if the tenant turns off, or gets cut off, it immediately reverts to my name. It must be on to prevent water main breaks.

This is why I sold my South Florida home vs rent
people are so ignorant! landlords can't legally cut your power! they can evict you for not paying. I had (free) advocate lawyers go after a POS landlord because he wanted us gone after an argument (he was also our boss). we were paid up and he had nothing to evict us for so he tried to shut the power off!
Used a light bulb socket with the plug in the side when it happened to me. Always can find a light
