My parents ignored my graduation from basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois, the only recruit in my company, and they never answered the phone before or during my flight home. I hitchhiked to my hometown when they answered the phone, and then it took them 2 hours to come and get me up. I said I should've got a hotel room, and my mother said Why didn't you?
As a retired Army Drill Sergeant & 1SG of a Drill Unit, I'm not a fan of Tap Out, for this very reason that not every graduate is able to have someone present and it can be demoralizing for some... 🥺😥😢😪

I know the feeling. I graduated from boot camp, and my family came, but they overslept and missed it all. Two years later, I got leave for two weeks after being injured in Vietnam. 20 hour flight, got to my local airport ,called home, no one answered. After four hours, I used my return ticket to head back to Vietnam. Yes, it still hurts 50 years later.😭

I graduated from Parris Island and had no one there for me. I got over it, "Adapted, Overcame, and Continued on as the Marine I was Trained to be" and NEVER looked back.

Twenty years ago, my husband and I attended our son's Air Force graduation. An incredible experience and so grateful we were able to attend. There were actually a couple of grads, who had no one attending, showing their support. I know there always legitimate reasons, but please, parents -- do everything possible to make it to graduation ✈

The military should stop this practice. It makes them feel like outcasts. I would have had no one either because it would have been a long trip for my parents.
