That was the Aurora Borealis, you saw. Aka The Northern Lights. Are you in middle/North PA? I saw a commenter asking what state you are in. I think you saw the Northern Lights. Its caused by charged ions interacting with the Earth's magets, which causes a reaction, releasing photons (light particles). You were apparently very lucky to see this. They're "low" because they were very far away.
