This type of false media is why social media sucks.
It's called a cross deck pennant and you use a crash bar to hold the cable from whipping around and that's what you're supposed to actually do. first time I did it. I did it wrong and it threw that crash bar across the flight deck. that thing hits you in the leg. you're screwed. That's an aviation bosons mate. they launch and recover aircraft. very dangerous job y'all people should have some respect.

The cable being retracted is the #3 wire that is the preferred wire of 4 total wires possible. If they were to miss the#4 wire they will just shoot across the carrier at full thrust and try again. But you can bet the pilot will have some explaining to do to his Squadron CO when he finally gets back aboard.

There was no panic. That was a routine carrier landing.
What you're calling a cable is called an arresting cable and can cause severe damage if a person gets hit by it.
