Porcupines do shoot quills up to 25 feet I would say that's one of the most painful animals in the wild next to a bagger, cougar or rabbid squirrel

i caught a porcupine eating my deck and i tried to scare it and it just looked at me like 'bro, come out and chew some boards with me'
Quite a few people don't realize that porquipines don't shoot their barbs but have to have something either attack it or brush up against it before the quills dislodge ( I was told by a rancher relative and a family friend to avoid hitting one because the quills will flatten a tire). And most definitely never try to pull the quills out of a pets muzzle take it to a vet and put them to sleep so the vet can remove them safely and effectively (the quills have barbs on the end and they hook into anything they touch)

they can throw the quills. and it's fast.barbed you have to push them on thru. native Americans used the quills for moccasins...R.E.D..U.S.M.C

Well, porcupines definitely don't shoot quills out from their bodies. However, let's say a dog attacks one, they will pull back full of quills. Fascinating animal.
