I can't speak for all but I know for me and the people I know when we say thank you we are saying thank you for putting yourself through that torture and potentially sacrificing yourself not necessarily thank you for killing but thank you for the sacrifice mental and spiritually

Thank you sir for “doing your job at the time, this is what u signed up for! “ Also it was gonna be you guys or them….. u handled business. I can’t imagine the struggle within, however we all respect and appreciate u doing what was needed to be done to save yourselves.
How many people were saved by killing those few? Were they going to kill innocent civilians? If there's war in heaven then how are you to think war isn't here? most of us hate war. but, it is sometimes needed.
