On February 18, 1996, during the Festa da Uva (Grape Festival) in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, journalist — and future senator — Lasier Martins was seriously injured during a live TV broadcast. While reporting for RBS TV, Martins reached out to touch a decorative bunch of grapes attached to a metal display. No one knew that a wiring defect had charged the entire structure with 220 volts. The moment Martins made contact, he was violently electrocuted. Viewers watched in shock as he convulsed, screamed, and collapsed on live television. The chaotic scene continued for a few seconds before the broadcast abruptly cut away. Martins was rushed to the hospital and, despite the intensity of the accident, survived without lasting injuries. The footage went on to become one of the most infamous moments in Brazilian television history. Years later, it resurfaced online and spread widely as a viral clip. Even so, the incident didn’t derail his career — Lasier Martins eventually moved into politics and served as a senator for Rio Grande do Sul from 2015 to 2023.
