They are called JATO, jet assisted take-off. They are used for take offs from short runways.

this is what killed many special forces in Iran when trying to rescue the Iran hostages by pres. Carter the fire from the booster jets caught the rear section of the plane on fire in the back section
They were doing that in the '50s in Antarctica.

The c130 doesn't need the rocket boosters to take off short runways. The video was probably an airshow video.

JATO was part of my AFSC and I worked on C130 Hercules quite a bit, but never once during my 5 yrs 8 months 2 wks of active duty. No B52 engine starter cartridges either! Thanks for your video and the memories!👍

Many years ago there was a report of a plane crash on a mountain. Turns out it was a Darwin Award winner strapped one of these or something like it to a car. When I read the original article I was crying, laughing so hard.

I first learned about JATO Rockets was when I seen the movie Darwin Awards when David Arquet strapped a JATO rocket to a pink Chevrolet sedan and it flew into the side of a mountain 😆😲

I was a passenger on many short runway landing in GITMO. There was a few close calls of no stopping in time. We had to make sure the M 198 weight was correct. We flew out of Cherry Point North Carolina. Taking was the same everything had to be correctly strapped down to take off. What we landed in GITMO weight wise, had to be the same. Taking off was always 10 more times scarier than landing.That plane would shake the fillings out of your teeth. 10th Marines sent a battery to GITMO every 3 months.
