"Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" by The Four Aces was one of the most successful film themes of the 1950s, defining the era's lush vocal pop style. It was the first #1 song on Billboard’s newly inaugurated Top 100 chart on November 12, 1955. The track held the top spot for six consecutive weeks in late 1955 and remained on the charts for a total of 21 weeks. The group performed the hit on The Ed Sullivan Show on August 14, 1955, shortly before it hit #1. Originally an instrumental theme, lyrics were added specifically to make the song eligible for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, which it won in 1956. While the song celebrated romance, film leads William Holden and Jennifer Jones famously clashed on set; Holden claimed Jones would chew garlic before their love scenes to annoy him.

Several major stars, including Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, initially turned down the song because they disliked it; they only recorded their own versions after The Four Aces made it a massive hit.
