customers should not be required to pay employee salary, tips are slave labor while business owners pocket millions while paying employees slave labor wages.

I don't know when tipping went from 17%. I usually tip 20%. this guy is effing crazy talking about 40%, you would have to be an extremely knowledgeable and likable and thorough worker for me to give you a 40% tip and I work in the service industry

If the service was worth it you get 15 to 20. But the service is rarely worth that.

Never gonna tip 40%. And ONLY tip on the pre tax total. And watch for a Gratuity pre added before tax (one major chain does for parties of five or more).

avator

The rationale for a higher percentage is the higher cost of living however if the customer is now paying more you automatically receive a higher tip. 15% is still acceptable!

Where do these people get off trying to say one is supposed to tip 30 to 40 percent? I was a server for over 50 years. I always told my trainees if they weren't making at least 15 to 18% they were in the wrong business. 18 to 20% is the norm now. Personally, I start with an amount in mind at the beginning, when eating out, for the tip. The service is what decides more or less. I do sometimes tip more than 20%.

A tip is not your salary... that's between you & your employer. A tip is for service that is prompt, friendly & efficient. Delivering the food isn't tip worthy....it's the job. Doing it with courtesy, a smile, timely & correctly is. The price of the meal shouldn't make a difference, steak isn't harder to deliver than a burger.

Only in America is tipping a thing, it can be considered an insult. In other countries, workers are paid a living wage by their employers. Their restaurant and transportation, and delivery prices are affordable. Something is very wrong with this picture, and it's the US.
