Mom should have disciplined the child the same as the dad. That eliminates the child thinking one parent is to be feared over another. Parents need to stand on a united front with discipline. What a mess.

It is better for him to be a little scared of you. I wish my son had been afraid of my husband, but my husband pretty much let my son do whatever he wanted. Not good........boys need a strong male role model, and they need a Dad who is not afraid to be a disciplinarian. Not that they should be abusive, just that they make sure the kid knows he can't get away with nonsense, especially hitting people.
Mom needs to learn to also punish him, time out or something.

If you dont want an angry kid dont allow your own anger show . Your kids should be able to talk to you about anything and not hide their feelings because they fear your reaction. Dont lie to your kids or make promises you cant keep. If you dont want your kids doing something , dont do it yourself.
