Honest question because I'm not in the construction industry here... Why aren't 4x4s, actually 4 in x 4 in? Is this the case with 2x4's and 2x6's, etc..

That's so funny, people still don't understand this has been going on. I believe they did it in the 50s or 60s. When they changed it over. Yes, it's still called a 4 / 4. Yes, it's 3 and a 1 by 3 and a 1. Obviously this guy doesn't know what he's talking about, because he said, it's a 4 / 4 / 4II mean no, no, no, no unless I we don't care about the leaks of it. It has nothing to do. It's not going to be 3 and a 1 feet long. If they says 4 feet long, it will be. But a 4 / 4 is 3 and a 1 by 3. And a half, and you'll send him over two at two by four.Just tell him to get you a straight one out.Especially at home depot, he never be able to get one or you take you one and try to tell you it's straight

You can get true lumber from a mill. It doesn’t have to be true to be structurally built.

and the older houses I'm going to say built before 1930 a 2x4 was actually 2 in by 4 in nowadays it's an inch and a half by three and a half why they start shaving them down I think they just little extra money on the side from the scrap pieces. try remodeling an old house from today's lumber, it's a pain in the butt

No, 2 x 4 or 4 x 4 actually measures 2“ x 4“ or 4“ x 4“ anywhere. This is pretty universal everywhere you go. I heard you to find me a 2 x 4 that actually measures 2” x 4”

let's get it straight. All lumber sizes have srank to the least possible size for solid construction. Yes 50 yrs ago if you where lucky true size lumber could by found. Now it has shrunk It's minumin size for building. The new guys don't know why all of this happened. There are a whole lot of reasons for it, the new generation doesn't know. And yes I agree about the stock being all 2nd lumber that the real lumber company's won't stock.

The unfinished piece of lumber is that size and then after planing and sizing it becomes smaller that's why

avator

the difference in size from old lumber a newer,is because they used run it the kiln to shrink it, then cut to size. now they cut it then kiln it. cheaper manufacturing, more profit. Just like the nickel candy bar.

I can remember when a 2x was 1 5/8" then changed to 1 1/2. The lumber yards would sell both together in the same load. That made framing a challenge, because nothing matched up.

What the hell does he talking about? Four by four by four, it's a four by four period by eight or ten foot long , i must not know a d*** thing about what real measurements are. As far as lumber goes, especially with his little pink tape measure that he stole from his daughter's tool set lol

avator

so a 4 by 4 is not 4 in. by 4 in. its always a half in. short no matter if its a 2 by 4 a 6 by 8 its always half inc shoort

avator

it's for the half inch osb that's added to outside of rough construction 3 and a half plus half gives you 4.
