It's due to the process of cutting, drying, and milling. They used to be closer to the exact dimensions, but, they weren't consistent.

Nominal lumber isn't the same as dimentional lumber! This guy doesn't own a man card and his boyfriend keeps his balls in his purse!

Everyone who deals with lumber knows this. It takes less than minute to educate yourself, but he goes ahead with video. That's ignorance and laziness. Also, 4x4x4 would be a cube.

Anyone in building knows those terms are nominal designations for lumber from a bygone era that was based on original precut and pre-dried measurements dating back to the early 1900s. Since the mid 60's those numbers came nominal sizes, not actual measurements.

Honest question because I'm not in the construction industry here... Why aren't 4x4s, actually 4 in x 4 in? Is this the case with 2x4's and 2x6's, etc..

That's so funny, people still don't understand this has been going on. I believe they did it in the 50s or 60s. When they changed it over. Yes, it's still called a 4 / 4. Yes, it's 3 and a 1 by 3 and a 1. Obviously this guy doesn't know what he's talking about, because he said, it's a 4 / 4 / 4II mean no, no, no, no unless I we don't care about the leaks of it. It has nothing to do. It's not going to be 3 and a 1 feet long. If they says 4 feet long, it will be. But a 4 / 4 is 3 and a 1 by 3. And a half, and you'll send him over two at two by four.Just tell him to get you a straight one out.Especially at home depot, he never be able to get one or you take you one and try to tell you it's straight

You can get true lumber from a mill. It doesn’t have to be true to be structurally built.

let's get it straight. All lumber sizes have srank to the least possible size for solid construction. Yes 50 yrs ago if you where lucky true size lumber could by found. Now it has shrunk It's minumin size for building. The new guys don't know why all of this happened. There are a whole lot of reasons for it, the new generation doesn't know. And yes I agree about the stock being all 2nd lumber that the real lumber company's won't stock.
