Granted my grandfather drove slow, but his dog would sit on the tool box and look over the cab for years.
We rode in the back of the truck as kids in the 70s. I still wouldnt put my dog back there today. She rides inside with me.

I always had my black Labs with me riding in the back of my truck. They didn't want to ride anywhere else. I know it can be dangerous to a degree but when and where I grew up it hadn't turned into the rat race it is now. I did have mine trained to sit right behind me and if they moved I would smack my back window and they would sit down. I did take dog kennels and put them in those if I was going very far but just going somewhere closer they rode the wind. I did it for 20 plus years and never had any problems. One time I had some people in a station wagon pull up on me cussing me out at first I couldn't figure out why but as I looked they had 3 or 4 little dogs in little cages riding along so then the light when on in my head and I gave them a wave 🖕😜
Ppl today are so strange.. We rode in the back of trucks all the damn time. Had the dogs, a boom box, and hell sometimes we had lawn chairs and the game was to see who could stay in one the longest. Our parents would turn trying to make us fall off. Oh the good ole days. But if you forgot to wear your sunglasses, you might end up blind from rocks, bugs and bees nailing you in the face and eyes... hehe
