Mooring lines do not make a ship stop faster. The ship should be barely moving when the shot line is "Thrown" to the line handlers. Yes if the tension is so great that the line parts. It can kill you. USN/Ret.

or at least when I was in the Navy use line called springlay. when ot snaps falls to deck after a few feet.
