It's almost all about the owner. Unfixed males are the biggest threat amongst any species but especially pit varieties. I have had pits for decades and have never had an issue with unprovoked violence.
If the fence was not there the pit would have been pulled apart...Those were Kangals on the other side of that fence...One of them would have killed that pit...You folks keep thinking pits are unbeatable...Google and research Turkish Kangals...and Alibi dogs...
