This is nonsense. Maria Paseka did not “quit”. Touching the bar but not performing is called scratching. In a team competition situation, each team will have their best gymnasts on the apparatus go first. If the score for the first 3 is good & their standing is held they will scratch their weakest (on that event) to preserve the gymnasts energy & prevent any risk of injury. Paseka is a vault specialist. She qualified for bars so if the team had needed her score she could have competed, however the others did well so she scratched to protect her from risk & conserved her energy for vault. It’s just strategy.

this is a complete lie she did not quit. I'm the team competitions they have different events and athletes doing multiples if I remember correctly she didn't do this event cause she is a vault specialist and didn't want to get hurt before her best event mind you there teammate who was the best on that event came after her. there was also a time where this happened and it was actually protesting against the judges that screwed a girl on scores so all the girls scratched to make sure the girl they screwed over won

Unrelated to this specific video, another reason why individuals or teams might scratch is in protest, against either Olympic rules or policies, or what they perceive as unfair or biased judging.
