Old man reporting the issue IS the issue. If you hear "automatic rifle of some sort" that sentence basically that the rifle has been identified as "automatic". So how would you know it's automatic unless you've heard automatic fire from it? You can't. So the old man pretty much said the fisherman fired the rifle, this is due to his explanation of the rifle style. Words in a sentence actually make a difference, make sure you use the right ones not just the ones you think are right and you just might keep someone from getting killed.
