The Multiple Kill Vehicle MKV concept allowed a single interceptor to deploy several small kill vehicles from one booster, increasing the chance of destroying the real warhead in a target cloud. A sensor equipped carrier vehicle released multiple independently guided kill vehicles, each weighing about 10 pounds and using onboard thrusters. MKV was intended to defeat medium to intercontinental range ballistic missiles with multiple warheads or decoys by engaging several objects at once. During an attack, the carrier would enter the missile path, use Ballistic Missile Defense System data and its own seeker, then guide kill vehicles to targets. Planned deployment included Ground Based Interceptors, KEI, and SM 3 Block IIA. Development was led by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. A successful hover and tracking test occurred in December 2008, but the program was canceled in 2009. A related effort resumed in 2015.
