yes they had sewing machines they could do that back in the '70s. we didn't buy a top of the line sewing machine we got a Sears Kenmore--mother wanted a Singer because the Singer had embroidery dials and the Singer would read the disk and sew according to the size of the disk-- some for leather or suede. The Sears Kenmore had plates and a whole machine foot pedal with an interior bobbin spread that was complex to do but great when you got it on for inc., quilting stich and bric a brac. The machine had several polyester stitches, an overcast and a stretch stitch to prevent regular stitching from cutting the polyester or breaking @ the seams as how SPANX and swimming suit- athletic wear stretches-- both even had monograms.

Tricky way to disguise a three corner tear. If you don't have a sewing machine or don't have one with an embroidery feature, you could always embroider over it by hand. It wouldn't have to be something as decorative as the one in the video.
