Nah, I used both; whooppings and timeouts/groundings...my kids turned out wonderfully. My oldest is 30 and youngest is 18; they're good people, contributing members of society and have careers that they're happy with. It's all about following through, don't just threaten but follow through...if you say they're going to get a *ss whoopping give them an *ss whooping, if they're in timeout for 5 mins they're in timeout for 5 mins, if they're grounded for 2 weeks then they're grounded for 2 weeks...don't back down because you're tired of having to deal with them...oh, also limiting time on electronics is important too, to many kids are getting lost on devices and are lacking on/in real world relationships.
