it's called blood wings. and everyone in the platoon that out ranks the one being promoted hits down on both sides at the same time with the balls of their fists....once. sometimes into the collarbone. common military tradition. I participated on both sides. Initiation/hazing maybe. coming of age and inclution...definitely!

I wanted blood wings when I got air assault and airborne wings but even in the early 90's, they had outlawed this in the U.S. military because they had done some damage to collar bones by hitting too hard on them.
