not all first surface mirrors are one way glass, they're used in any type of quality optics and are superior mirrors. and all someone has to do to set up a one way mirror that looks legit is add a pane of glass in front of the one way panel, so a visible gap also isn't a completely trustworthy indicator that a mirror is just a mirror. it's a decent rule of thumb, but it's not even remotely close to being a completely accurate test

I worked in a glass company and most mirrors are made from 1/4" glass with a silver backing. the 1/4 glass gives you a gap. mirrored closet doors are 1/8" glass with a flexible backing so if it breaks it won't crumble to the floor in chunks like most mirrors.
