something like a shirt towel on top of your turbos it'll kill the engine but what do I know I'm just sitting here in my comfy bed on Thanksgiving watching a diesel blow up

A garbage bag over air intake would have shut it down.

So I guess none of you ever had that happen. Here's your answer. Set brakes. Put it in highest gear and let the clutch out.

It’s called a runaway diesel engine I’ve seen this happen many times it’s no big deal

My question would be how does it leak enough to burn its own oil? How is the oil getting dumped into the engine?

Back in the "OLD" days, some trucks came with an "EMERGENCY CUT OFF." A cable that activated a "butterfly" cutoff on the air intake.

wow I read these comments and more than 2/3rd have no idea what they are talking about I have only 43 years experience in trucking and luckily never experienced a runaway diesel. if u can stop the fuel do it older units had simple valves on fuel tank.somtime heat prevents that so your left with air starvation at the breather aka air intake and if that don't work fire department and fire extinguisher. and to the guy who mentioned the engine running on it's own oil ura genius. NOT oil may burn but won't run an engine. oil hot enough to burn creates sludge

I put a shut off valve in my truck because when I was younger that happened to my truck it was only 10 dollars and I installed it in 1 hour good luck with that my friends ✌️

should have put it in a high gear before it reached that pint and killed the truck.

he needed to pop the hood and block off the air intake. the only way to shut down a runaway engine.

know of a hand replaced a turbo on a 425 Cat, failed to clean the air intake system including aftercooler of oil.,sat in the driver's seat, started engine in gear but with the clutch depressed, engine took off running ungovernable as it was burning the engine oil which remained in the intake system, the high rpm locked the clutch and the tractor finally stalled 3/4 way through the guard shack. which along with the engine ,truck tractor, and wannabe mechanic all became history

the only way to stop it is to smother it and from my past experience's with this it's good to have an rubber floor matt to cover the air induction where the air filter is and try to keep it from sucking it into the intake cause it will just get eaten by the turbo propellers I've seen em shred coats pillows etc the floor mat is the only thing I've found to successfully cutt off the air flow to the engine if you don't do this it will result in the complete loss of the engine by it usually throwing main bearing threw the side of the block if it doesn't catch fire first this is a pretty common event with these high mileage diesel engines

the only way to shut any diesel engine down like that is to suffocate it. either with Co2 or intake blockage. a Detroit diesel has incorporated plate of supercharger

Blown turbo. Only way to shut it off is to put it in gear, hold the brake pedal to the floor and let the clutch out. The sooner the better

Our fire trucks are equipped with an emergency air shutoff gate valve on the air intake. This was used in case we would drive into a fuel rich environment accidentally. This was always a possibility when we responded to a large gasoline spill or a ruptured propane tank or natural gas pipeline. These flammable vapors would replace the diesel fuel that was shut off by the equipments start/run switch. Our air shut off valve was a spring loaded plate that was released by a switch on the dash. The plate had to be manually reset on the engine after it was triggered, and the environment was safe to reset it.

Detroit diesel were known for that for years. Diesel mechanics training, Keep a thick book around and shut off it's air. It will suck the oil out of the pan to burn. No air no burn!
