down shifting is always better, makes your brakes last longer.

u reverse the gears just upside to the way u went forward with them say u come up on a stop sign u see it 200 ft ahead your in 5th gear and u know you are going to have to slow down u start down shifting from 5th gear then fourth gear then 3 d gear and etc by the time you stop you will be in 1st gear ready to take off again once you b stop. got it babe

you roll it in neutral so your transmission is not being strained by sitting there trying to slow the vehicle down by gearing it down I put more wear and tear on the brakes

there are many answers. some people say downshifting to help you slow down will save on your brakes and some people say just throw neutral and put the brake on. in my opinion if you allow yourself plenty enough time to stop I always put in a neutral and slow down because you get a lot of people that will try to downshift to help them slow down and they downshift too soon and they cause transmission problems or clutch problems. the manual transmission was the first thing I learned to drive on and I just make sure I give myself plenty of time to stop and throw it neutral

Downshift if I’m up to speed, I’ll toss it in neutral and brake if I’m rolling slow already.

I drove a school bus, I'd down shift the initial braking, and brake from there, in winter with snow or ice covering the road I would put the bus in neutral or else the wheels would lock-up and skid, I do the same in my automatic daily driver in the wintery conditions

if you're driving an old school car with drum brakes you downshift, modern cars you neutral and break.

The correct answer would be you press on your clutch and put your shifter in neutral and only use a break to slow down , now if traffic starts moving, then I look at my speed to see where I’m at as far as what gear I’m gonna use to keep going

you can down shift but n then break probably better on your transmission but in a big rig you cant ride the n so down shift is my answer

depends on traffic and how it's moving. usually I'll just use third to slow down then go to first. if traffic is crawling I'll just let it coast.

Always down shift...slows vehicle WITHOUT using the brakes...especially when off-roading...keeps vehicle from sliding and losing tire contact with the dirt or rock surface...I have the ORIGINAL 4 disc brakes on my '97 Honda Prelude that has a 5-speed and 250 ponies from a 2.2 liter...
